Nov. 4th, 2008 05:06 pmWhenever I've voted before, I make the usual careful, but ocassionally superficial review of the issues, find out which candidate is closer to my style of thinking, and fill in my ballot. Not much beyond that, not much interest, maybe a little more "aw, hell" in 04 than previous years.
But, all in all, my attachment to who's sitting in the Oval Office has been almost nil.
This year, the more I dug, the more I found myself really thinking this might be it... that someone, in the form of Barak Obama, sees that things need to be *different*, that DC-As-Usual isn't serving the American People anymore.
Is he perfect? No. This is still politics, you know. But he dreams, and he inspires, and he speaks from the gut. He's not the ususal 'Yer Country, let me lead it' cacophany.
Several people in my social circle (in and out of LJ) have made a concious, well reasoned, educated decision not to vote. And decision made in awareness, made with eyes open, and not out of reflex, is a good one. Even thought it's not my decision (and, in point, some of their reasons for *not* voting, are exactly the reasons I do), their choice must be respected. Part of the privilige of voting, is the freedom to abstain from voting.
