I'll second this. I _still_ have a hard time accepting help from people. (And right now I have a sore wrist because of it as a reminder thanks to large furniture.)
I too have a special needs child (Autistic) and that can run into some serious numbers especially if doctors are involved. There's no shame in taking help if offered. And as parents it's often our duty to do the nasty things to help our family survive and grow. We may not like those things but they have to be done.
And besides - sometimes people in this society don't know _how_ to help. Often this unfortunately defaults to throwing money if they can think of no other way. This is just taking advantage of that.
Oh - one big note that popped into my head. Make sure you report this donated income on your taxes somehow. I'd check with a tax specialist just to be safe.
