how bad is it to mix welbutrin and alcohol? Like very sleepytired bad, or ZOMG bad?
/me will be sad if she's doomed to never have a glass of wine or a gin and lavender soda ever again.

I hate to tell you but yeah, if you're taking nearly any sort of psych med, your drinking days are over for the most part. This, of course, is a sweeping generalization but in my experience (Lamictal, BuSpar, Celexa, and Seroquel), if I drink nowadays, it isn't if I'll barf, its when. If only it was a single time barf but no, the drugs make it go on for hours. One good thing I can say for it is that this current med cocktail the doc has me on has cured my formerly incipient alcoholism. I was well on my way to being alcoholic when I broke down and ended up on all these meds.

I would ask your doctor before drinking right now, especially in light that you just got out of the hospital. Focus on resting and regaining your equilibrium.

I take Welbutrin and haven't yet had a problem drinking.

Seriously, you should ask your doctor about this, not the internets. If nothing else, they know more about your actual situation than we do, and probably know more about the drug, interactions and dosages.

That said, there is a page on the subject here.

I haven't had a problem, but the dose I take of Celexa is relatively mild.

With Wellbutrin, the biggest concern is seizures. Wellbutrin lowers your seizure threshold. So does alcohol. Mixing them is worse than either alone.

So, if you've had seizures, you need to be on the wagon while you're on Wellbutrin.

Wellbutrin = Buproprion, which is what I'm on. I don't have a problem with a beer once in a while; during BayCon, I got actually intoxicated once, and had no worse effects than usual. Of course, ask your doctor, etcetera.

Wellbutrin? God, I don't remember. I know that Prozac and alcohol is right out. (That is, you'll be right out.)

I think Wellbutrin and alcohol utilize different networks in the liver. This is precisely the problem with alcohol and Prozac.

Sounds like people have pretty much covered it at this point, but here's as succinct an answer as I can make: Drugs react differently with different people, ergo their interactions with alcohol are different with different people. Talk to your doctor, and s/he may be able to give you some things to look for if you'd like to continue recreation consumption of alcohol. Of course, even after talking to your doctor, the only way to know may be to experiment, cautiously.

Not very succinct, was I?

Ask your doctor. I'm on Abilify and can have a single glass of wine or a single shot of alcohol. ANy more than that and I get a headache and nauseated. Now, wellbutrin is different, but I KNOW most psych meds have some form of interaction with alcohol, so be careful and ask about it.
